In a significant step towards embedding artificial intelligence in healthcare services, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has partnered with Newton's Tree, a pioneering health tech startup and NVIDIA Inception Program member. AI has huge potential to revolutionise patient care and operational efficiency – from supporting early cancer diagnosis to helping prioritise and reduce patient waiting lists. This collaboration will see the deployment of Newton's Tree's vendor-neutral AI platform across Leeds Teaching Hospitals, which will allow the Trust to procure, integrate, and monitor 3rd party AI algorithms.
Leeds Teaching Hospital Chief Scientific Officer, Professor David Brettle, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “Healthcare faces huge challenges in the post-Covid world, and Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to adopting transformative technologies to improve patient care. This collaboration has the potential to significantly enhance our diagnostic and treatment capabilities, ensuring high-quality care for our patients in a safe way.”
Professor Andy Scarsbrook, Consultant Radiologist and Professor of Clinical Radiology at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, is leading the project locally: “Integrating the Newton’s Tree AI platform allows us to rapidly scale our ability to evaluate and implement AI applications. This will ensure we are able to enhance patient outcomes whilst ensuring these technologies are safe and effective. We are looking forward to developing prospective monitoring capabilities with Newton’s Tree in the coming months.”
Newton’s Tree’s enterprise AI platform enables healthcare providers to procure, evaluate, integrate, and monitor third party AI products as part of routine care pathways. Their vendor-neutral platform is built on open standards and supports deployment and monitoring of AI software across all specialties, including pre-market products. This partnership aims to set a benchmark for AI integration in healthcare, demonstrating a scalable model that can be replicated across other NHS trusts.
Haris Shuaib, CEO of Newton's Tree and NHS Consultant Clinical Scientist, shared his vision for the partnership: “Leeds Teaching Hospitals are ideal partners in our journey to help the healthcare system adopt AI in a safe and efficient manner. Being leaders in this space, Leeds has experienced many of the challenges our platform solves around AI implementation and we’re excited to work with them as they scale their use of AI.”
